Natural Medicine Consultation

Consultation in a natural medicine facilitator license—specifically within emerging regulated frameworks like Colorado's Natural Medicine Health Act—is a critical, state-mandated process designed to ensure safety, ethical compliance, and professional competence. It acts as a mentorship bridge between training and independent practice

Key Benefits of Consultation for Licensees:

  • Fulfillment of State Licensure Requirements: In Colorado, completing 40 hours of consultation with a qualified supervisor is mandatory for full, independent licensure after completing training. An additional 12 hours of consultation is required for annual licensure renewal each year following the initial licensure. DORA required consultation verification form.

  • Case Review and Risk Management: Consultations involve reviewing specific, real-world client cases. This helps identify risks, such as high-dose sensitivity, medication interactions, or underlying mental health issues that necessitate a referral to a medical or behavioral health provider.

  • Development of Core Competencies: The process focuses on refining essential skills, including:

    • Non-Directive Approach: Training on how to support a client's own journey without imposing personal, spiritual, or psychological narratives.

    • Relational Boundaries: Navigating the complex dynamics of physical touch, power dynamics, and emotional transference, including establishing a "Touch Contract".

    • Cultural Competence & Humility: Ensuring that services respect diverse backgrounds and traditions.

  • Ethical Decision-Making: Consultants guide trainees through navigating complex ethical dilemmas that arise during preparation, administration, and integration.

  • Professional Support and Self-Care: Regular consultation sessions help identify and manage burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma in practitioners.

  • Validation of Practice: The consultation period often allows trainees to work under a "Training License," enabling them to practice and charge for services legally while receiving expert oversight.

Structure of Consultation:

  • Consultation sessions are established at 60-minutes or 90-minutes.

  • Consultation can be conducted individually or in groups (up to 10 participants) and

  • frequently involves reviewing questions/concerns from facilitation sessions, discussing case notes, and engaging in role-plays to develop, and demonstrate, competence in non-ordinary states of consciousness.
